The cockpit of an ATR aircraft is filled with numerous lights and
labels in various colors. Each color, however, carries a specific meaning.That is what I will talk about today.

🔹 What is the Dark Cockpit Concept?
Despite the name, the dark cockpit doesn’t mean there are no lights at all—it means no warning or status lights are visible during normal operation. When everything is working as it should, the cockpit appears dark, indicating a normal operational status. This concept greatly enhances situational awareness and reduces unnecessary distractions for pilots.

🔹 Cockpit Light Colors & Their Meanings
Let’s break down the lights by color:

✅ Black – Normal. No indication means everything is functioning properly. For example, when a generator is working correctly, it doesn’t show a light.

⚪ White – Off. Indicates systems that have been manually turned off, like fuel pumps or windshield heaters when the aircraft is shut down.

🔵 Blue – Manually ON. Used when pilots have manually activated a system, such as anti-icing or hydraulic cross-feed.

🟢 Green – Automatically ON. Signifies systems that are turned on and operating automatically. For instance, electric fuel pumps that run automatically and shut off after the engine starts.

🟠 Amber – Selected ON but not operational. Common before engine start, amber lights disappear as systems come online. They also indicate warnings that require pilot action but are not immediate threats.

🔴 Red – Emergency. Indicates critical failures or malfunctions like engine fire, smoke, or loss of cabin pressure. These require immediate memory action and are backed up by chimes, flashing red lights, and alert messages.

⚠️ Exception to the Dark Cockpit Rule:
Sometimes, aircraft are dispatched with known defects under the Minimum Equipment List (MEL). This allows operations with certain inoperative systems under strict conditions. For example, if ice protection fails, the aircraft cannot fly in icing conditions.
