Sea level change refers to the rise or fall in the average level of the Earth's oceans and is mainly caused by two factors: thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of land-based ice.

Thermal expansion occurs when water heats up, causing it to expand and take up more space. As global temperatures continue to rise due to human-caused climate change, the ocean waters are getting warmer and expanding, leading to a rise in sea level.

Melting of land-based ice, such as glaciers and ice sheets, also contributes to sea level rise. As the Earth's temperature increases, the ice melts, and the water flows into the oceans. This melting is currently the largest contributor to sea level rise.

Sea level change has significant consequences, including coastal flooding, erosion, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater resources. It can also have far-reaching impacts on global climate patterns and weather systems. Addressing the causes of sea level change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is critical to mitigating its negative effects.
