The Kathmandu Valley houses ancient cities with a rich cultural heritage, including seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These sites contribute to the Valley's unique historical character, shaping the cultural identity of its people and providing significant economic benefits. However, as the cities continue to grow, it is crucial to protect the monuments and old structures during development work. One such development project involved laying underground water supply and sewerage pipes in the narrow lanes of Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The challenge was to carry out this work without causing damage to the vulnerable structures or disrupting the daily lives of residents. The ADB-supported Kathmandu Valley Wastewater Management Project prepared Heritage Impact Assessment of Patan Durbar Square as a tool to evaluate potential impacts and propose institutional and mitigation measures for their protection. This well-planned procedure has ensured that ancient objects and artifacts discovered during the excavation for sewer lines are properly handled and preserved by the government. The video showcases the lessons learned in supporting infrastructure development in culturally significant areas, emphasizing that with careful planning and quality implementation, win-win solutions can be achieved for communities and heritage conservation.
