LEAD-IN:

China's BYD automaker made waves on the opening day of the Geneva International Motor Show, showcasing a floating SUV.

The electric vehicle giant also premiered its first plug-in hybrid model for Europe.

STORYLINE:

With many big brands opting to stay away from this year's motor show, many eyes were on what Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD had to offer.

And they didn't disappoint.

The U8 4x4 from BYD's luxury Yangwang sub-brand can float on water and turn 360 degrees using a ‘tank turn’ mode.

Revealed last year, the U8 made its European debut at the motor show largely to test European public opinion.

There's been no confirmation that the 1,184bhp plug-in hybrid SUV will be hitting European shores any time soon.

The Yangwang U8 is positioned as high-end new energy hardcore off-road SUV, according to BYD, and it's equipped with two full-stack in-house developed core technologies: the e4 Platform and BYD DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, boasting excellent off-road capability and state-of-the-art technology.

BYD Co., which last year dethroned Texas-based Tesla Inc. as the top seller of electric cars in the last three months of 2023, is also showcasing several EVs headed to European markets.

The Seal U DM-i is touted as the safest electric family SUV in its class and introduces ‘BYD super dual mode technology’ to the continent.

According to BYD, it's an ideal family-sized car that provides "a fusion of elegant dynamic style, high-tech intelligent experiences and practical SUV functionality."

The company's sporty Seal sedan, which has recently gone on sale in Europe, was also shortlisted for the 2024 Car of the Year award, marking the company's first ever appearance on the list.

Analysts say Chinese automakers, who have gone from no EV market share in Europe two years ago, now have some 10% of the market.

The Geneva International Motor Show, once a full-throttle celebration of motoring excess, returns this week some five years since the last edition and four years since the 2020 gathering was cancelled last-minute due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The event will be open to the public from February 27 to March 3 at Geneva’s Palexpo convention center.
