NBCUniversal held a community screening of The Culture Is: Indigenous Women hosted by Tlingit and Haida tribal citizen Alyssa London.

In attendance were various series guests including Crystal Echo-Hawk (Pawnee), Executive Director of IllumiNative, Amber Midthunder (Fort Peck Assiniboine/Sioux), the first Indigenous actress to lead an action franchise, Kimberly Kim Teehee (Cherokee), Cherokee Nation's First Delegate-elect to Congress, Nancy Shippentower (Puyallup), Puyallup elder and activist and Jhane Myers (Comanche and Blackfeet) Emmy Award winning film producer. Also in attendance were several prominent Native and Indigenous community members from across the nation, including San Manuel Tribal Secretary Audrey Martinez and Frenandeño Tataviam Tribal President Rudy Ortgea Jr.

Attendees featured in this FNX NOW segment are filmmaker and photographer Pamela Peters (Diné) and Hollywood Celebrity Makeup Artist & Hairstylist and TV Personality Derrell Redleaf (Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nation).

The program is the fourth installment of the Culture Is series, and will feature Indigenous Women who are shaping American Culture.

“This special is part of the culture is series. And the specials that have aired so far are the culture is black women, the culture is Latina women and the culture is AAPI women. And so culture is indigenous women is the fourth installment or the fourth special in this culture is series. And what's special about this one is that it's rare that there's native content in general, we're changing that slowly but surely in media, but it's rare to have a forum for Indigenous women to come together and talk about topics that are important and retain to our community specifically.” – Alyssa London

London, an NBC News and MSNBC contributor was the first person of Tlingit descent to be crowned Miss Alaska USA, and is the founder of the media and education company Culture Story which can be seen on FNX Television. She describes hosting The Culture Is Indigenous Women as surreal, and reflected on some of her favorite moments from the series in this segment.

The Culture Is: Indigenous Women premieres Sunday, June 4 at 10 p.m. ET/7pm PT. on MSNBC, and will also be streaming on Peacock.
