Paul McCartney wanted to make a film about The Beatles and their music after the success of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Several "normal" people would ride a bus on indeterminate "magical" adventures, similar to Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. That is, Paul had to record, produce, write, direct, and edit the project on his own.
