The beginning of the 21st century saw a shift in the gaming industry – one that began to cater toward shareholders and executives rather than designers and consumers. As gaming became the most profitable form of entertainment on the planet, and made a handful of people very, very, rich, - hitting deadlines for release windows became the name of the game. The inherent volatility that comes with making video games makes it extremely difficult to plan and quantify how much time any given project needs. But, because studios and developers have to answer to publishers, corporate executives, and the ever-changing and easily distracted whims of the general public, the people who actually make these games are rarely afforded the time and labor they need to make their art while maintaining a reasonable work-life balance. The inevitable end stage for this business model, coupled with the lack of any significant regulations, naturally leads to worker exploitation. Crunch culture, widespread sexism, high turnover, and an overall toxic work environment seems to, sadly, be the norm for many of these companies.
