208, 209 Climbing Mt. Rainier, Parts 1 & 2
In a special two-part adventure, host John Viehman joins renowned mountaineer Peter Whittaker in Washington's Mount Rainier National Park to show how climbing this glacier-draped 14,410-foot peak is a major undertaking, but one that most anyone in good physical shape can handle. The first episode lays the groundwork for a big-mountain ascent: a snow and ice-climbing course where we'll learn how to use anice axe and crampons, and how to rope up with partners for safety. Part 2 takes us up the mountain on what Whittaker says will likely be "the longest, hardest day of your life." We'll also cover altitude sickness, pre-trip training and the gear needed to camp out on a snowfield.
