In WordPress, you can create multi-level/hierarchical menus through the WordPress menu system (WordPress Management - Appearance - Menu) and theme customizer (WordPress Management - Appearance - Customize). In this document, we will understand the steps to create a multi-level/hierarchical menu. We will first look at the WordPress menu system.

WordPress menu system You can access the WordPress menu system by logging in to the WordPress dashboard, and then navigating to Appearance - Menu. Set screen options
In the upper right corner of the screen, you can find the screen options tab. Click it to drop down and display all available types and attributes. Check all available checkboxes except for the description checkbox.

Click the Create new menu link. Enter the name of your new menu. In this video, we will name it Sample Menu. Click the Create menu button. Assigning the menu position Next, we need to assign the menu to its position. Assign the sample menu to the main menu (topic position) by checking the check box. Click the "Save Menu" button.

There are 6 types of menu items available. Pages-They is pages you create. Posts-They is blog posts created by you. Custom link-You can use it to create menu items that link to any URL. Categories-These are the categories available to you. Tags-These are the tags you can use. Formats-they these is the post formats available to you. Keep your menu as short as possible. Speaking from personal experience when you try to save a very large menu, sometimes the menu items are lost.

This happens because you have posted too much data for your server to process. You can easily access a short and organized menu on your mobile device. The long menu is difficult to access on mobile devices because it requires scrolling and is not user-friendly. Normally, we only assign pages to menus because they are not accessible unless we mark them as menus. We will not assign posts to the menu because they can be accessed through your homepage or post page.
