In late 2021, the Solidarity Fund released a call for proposals under its Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund. The call was for projects implemented by non-profit organisations (NPO’s) that are providing relief to communities negatively impacted by the unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in the winter of 2021.

In response to this call the Association for Rural Advancement (AFRA) successfully submitted a proposal that sought to support and further develop the livelihood initiatives of people living on farms, including land reform beneficiaries, as well as members of small agricultural collectives living on farms and in peri-urban areas. The project also focused on urban and farm dwellers that had received Solidarity input Vouchers. These target beneficiaries, all of whom reside in the uMgungundlovu District of KwaZulu-Natal, were negatively affected by the social unrest on 2021. The objective of the project was to secure household food security and promote household income through agriculture and associated small enterprises, thereby providing greater resilience to buffer against future crises.

This short video documents peer to peer training, where new farmers visited successful farming enterprises for learning and relationship-building.
