In the mid-1700s, Robert Murray bought a big slice of land way uptown—aka East 33rd to 39th Street today—and built a fancy mansion called Inclenberg overlooking the East River. Total peace and quiet.

But here’s where it gets juicy: during the Revolutionary War, British General Howe was marching through after the Battle of Kip’s Bay. Robert’s wife, Mary Lindley Murray, invited the officers in for some polite tea and chit-chat......which totally stalled them—just long enough for George Washington’s troops to escape. Talk about using hospitality as a secret weapon.

Today, Murray Hill still has that old-school elegance, with classic prewars, leafy streets, and a whole lot of charm.
