There are several ways to manage that small direct stock next to the line and all those utility points (like hygiene stations) around the factory - the Milk Run is one way to do this very effectively.
It's not the best fit for all cases, so let's not see it as an alternative to Kanban. In fact, it can be nicely combined with Kanban systems into one smooth internal logistics system that ensures that your operators always have all the materials they need for optimally effective production.
