The Temple of Horus, also called "Edfu Temple", is an ancient Egyptian temple complex located in the west of the city of Edfu in Upper Egypt. The city is located on the western bank of the Nile, about a hundred kilometers north of Aswan and about 85 kilometers south of Luxor. Construction of the temple began in 237 BC under Pharaoh Ptolemy III Euergetes I and was not completed until 57 BC. Thus, the construction lasted a total of 180 years and took place under the direction of a total of eleven pharaohs. Today, the Edfu temple is one of the best preserved temple complexes in all of Egypt.
Horus is descended from Osiris, the god of the dead, and his sister Isis. His wife was Hathor of Dendera, with whom he had a son, Harsomtus. The ancient Egyptians regarded Horus as the father of the respective ruling king. Therefore, the names of Horus were also symbolically in the name of the kings who received them at the beginning of their reign.
At the entrance of the Horus temple are two falcon statues. They are made of black granite and represent the god Horus. Furthermore, in the entrance area there are two pylon towers, which were decorated with a picture. The picture depicts the king confronting Egyptian enemies with his sword.
After the pylon towers, visitors to the temple enter the colonnaded courtyard, which is surrounded by 32 columns. The columns have capitals decorated with different flower and leaf shapes. A large altar once stood in the center of the courtyard. The construction of the colonnaded courtyard dates back to 116 to 71 BC.
Behind the colonnaded courtyard is the pronaos. The portico, consisting of three times six composite columns, is 1.5 m high and 34 m wide. On the left side of the pronaos there is a small chapel where the king priest performed his rites. On the right side there is also a small room, which probably served as a library. From the pronaos, on both the left and right sides, there is access to a corridor that runs from the colonnaded courtyard between the enclosing wall of the temple house and the outer walls of the temple. The Pronaos is followed by the Great Hall, the Sacrificial Table Hall and finally the Sanctuary. A statue of Horus was once located here. In the Hall of the Offering Table there are two entrances to another corridor that leads around the outside of the sanctuary. From this corridor there are again rooms that served as chapels for other deities.
The entire structure is covered with a large number of inscriptions and images. They document not only the construction of the temple of Horus, but also describe the life of the god Horus and the battles against his enemies.
