The use of horses to pull barges on waterways was much more efficient, as a horse could pull between 30 and 50 times more cargo on a barge than it could on a cart.

Horse-drawn barges were used for commercial transport until the middle of the 20th century, and even after the introduction of steam and motor boats, horse-drawn craft continued to operate and compete with them.

Before the widespread development of canals, goods were transported by horse-drawn carts, but this became impractical as the volume and weight of cargo increased during the Industrial Revolution. In the UK, horse-drawn barges were used well into the 1960s for commercial transport, and some are still used today for passenger trips and other leisure activities.
