Описание к видео Short The Surprising Impact of a Window Tax on Society

The Surprising Impact of a Window Tax on Society.
In England during the reign of William III in 1696, the government introduced a window tax in order to increase state revenues. Later, this tax also appeared in France, Ireland, and Scotland. The essence of the tax was that the more windows a house had, the more its owner had to pay in taxes. As the window tax seemed more fair than a direct property tax, it was quickly accepted.

The tax rates varied depending on the number of windows in the house. For example, houses with less than ten windows were exempt from the tax. Owners of houses with 10-20 windows had to pay a small tax, while owners of houses with more than 20 windows had to pay a significantly higher tax.

However, as a result of this tax, many homeowners began to brick up windows in their homes to reduce their tax payments. This led to many homes becoming dark and unwelcoming. This also had an impact on public health, as the lack of light and ventilation became a cause for the spread of diseases.

The window tax was in effect in England and Wales until 1851, and in Scotland until 1850. This historical fact is a good example of how legislative measures can have far-reaching consequences and how tax policy can affect people's behavior and society as a whole.
