STORYLINE:

British beef is back on the French menu after six years.

France had banned British beef imports amid fears over BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy), otherwise known as mad cow disease, but the product was relaunched at an International Food Fair in Paris on Monday.

Four hundred kilogrammes of UK grown beef were cleared for export to France uniquely for food fair.

Hailing the qualities of the product, British Agriculture Minister Margaret Beckett served up slices of roast beef and told the media it was "a great sadness that the French public have been denied the opportunity of consuming British beef".

Surrounded by a wide range of cuts, Beckett posed for photographers with various slices of meat although she did not taste any herself. She did, however, praise the quality of British beef saying that it could compete with any in the world.

Meanwhile, British exporters await the final clearance to begin shipping more of their beef to France. France's head of the Meat and Livestock Commission, Remi Fourrier, says it's just a matter of days.
