Long Beach will have a Pioneer League baseball team that has two names. As confusing as that may seem, it’s nothing compared to the farcical process that played out in trying to find one moniker.

A situation made all the more farcical by the fact that, as all of this was playing out in the LBC, the same thing was playing out in Modesto with their expansion Pioneer League team. Two teams in the same league starting play in the same season in the same state, holding the same name, the team contests doing the same stupid thing.

Oh yeah, pop culture also played a role in both naming shenanigans. In Modesto, issues surrounding the movie American Graffiti. In Long Beach, they have Warren G. That’s a pretty cool get. And as we’ve seen with the Oakland Ballers, having local community legends involved adds credibility to a fledgling franchise in a league many people may not be familiar with.

Unlike those Ballers of Oakland, the people in charge of the Long Beach Pioneer League franchise lacked a clear vision for the team’s identity. And this is where things go south.

We start with a name-the-team contest that really isn’t a name-the-team contest and more like a can you guess the team name we’re thinking of contest. It’s the illusion of free will and a chance at some free publicity along with newsletter signups.

There were less than 5,000 votes cast. And then the winning “names”, more on that in a second, are made public, but a winner is never mentioned. A vote tally is nowhere to be found.

What is explained is that the team will have a name and go full-on Chris Gaines with an alternate identity. It’s Garth Brooks form is Long Beach Coast, while Chris Gaines, in this case, is the Long Beach Regulators.
The Parrots were likely never in serious consideration, given the fact that no trademark was ever filed for the name. The other two, however, well, they had been trademarked.

Rumor has it the Regulators name won the fan vote, but those running the team were not inclined to use it as a primary because Warren G holds the trademark.
