After retirement, the R42s have been kept around for duties on work trains, mainly garbage collection and rail adhesion. Here's a view of a set of these cars that have been retrofitted with in-frame security sensors for use as an NYPD/FBI/Homeland Security training train, as well as for movie/TV shoots.

This is a great example of the MTA's policy of adaptive reuse. Notably, these cars were retired over 4 years ago, in 2020. They still seem to run quite well! The reuse of retired rolling stock for non-revenue purposes is considered international best practice in the transit industry. Enjoy!
