In my latest YouTube livestream (exclusive to Members), we dove into the challenges singers face when dealing with illness—something I’m navigating myself right now! We also touched on a topic that many singers and students ask me about: the idea of “stopping” the air while singing.

I get it—different teachers may use this term with good intentions, but let’s be clear: terminology matters.

Telling singers to literally “stop” the air often leads to a dangerous habit of forcing phonation with excessive tension. This can result in:
❌ Grunting or squeezing the vocal cords
❌ Unnecessary subglottic pressure
❌ Fatigue, limited artistry, and unhealthy vocal production

Instead, aim to sing SUL FIATO—on the breath! This approach promotes efficient airflow, vocal freedom, and a healthier technique overall. ✅
