The McDonnell Douglas MD-80, and the early version called the Douglas DC-9, are beloved aircraft in the aviation community. Classic, powerful, workhorse, and legendary are some of the words the come to mind. They are rare but still used pretty much all over the world with almost 200 frames still active, both passenger and cargo variants. I did two flights on an MD-82 with European Air Charter in the past. They are really cool planes! Laredo Airport, situated in Texas very close to the US / Mexican border is one of the places where you can enjoy a lot of these spectacular aircraft. When I visited in October last year, I caught six MD-80's from USA Jet, one from Everts Air Cargo, one from World Atlantic Airways (a stunning bare metal livery) and seven from Aeronaves TSM in black and red liveries. I even caught two real DC-9's, one from Aeronaves and one from Ameristar! To catch my first two DC-9's, (and active DC-9's!!!) was absolutely amazing! The sounds from the legendary Pratt & Whitney JT8D's are epic. I was able to make to many amazing shots of these planes in the space of four days of spotting. I hope you enjoy them!
