Oil based food colouring test | Colour Mill | How to make yellow icing

This week I'm testing different colours of oil based food colouring and want to share my results with you. This range of colours is the talk of all of my baking groups lately and has become a real game-changer for those that use oil based frostings. I also love that it is allergen free and suitable for vegans.

In this video, we'll take a look at yellow and run some controlled tests comparing the colour depth with a different number of drops added and also a time development test.

If you wish to replicate the colours shown in the video, I used 100g of buttercream and this ratio can also be applied to cream.

Oil based food colouring can be used in buttercream, cream, baking, fondant, chocolate and ganache. I would not recommend using this type of colouring in royal icing or meringue as the oil will affect your egg white and cause it to split.
