Kaleidoscope Chinese Performing Arts Society Performing at Moon Festival at Woodbine Mall.

Sleeve Dance is choreographed from Peking Opera the Dark Night. It is from famous opera Farewell My Concubine. This is about the war and love story of King of Chu and his concubine Yu in ancient China of DC200. The music uses Peking Opera’s drum and Jinhu to interpret the vigorous emotions. The dance costumes and the makeups are all from traditional Peking opera. Using the opera’s dancing steps and together with the long sleeves’ specific throwing, whisking, swing, shaking, dragging, holding to represent the feelings of happiness, anger, sorrow and joyfulness. The night was dark and quiet with high moon in the sky. The king’s concubine Yu walked out of the tent. All of sudden, she heard the drums from the enemy’s camp. The defeating was near and her Hero king had nowhere to go. She took the sword and died to a forever love story. This tragic moment, fixed in between the lines in Chinese literature and on the classic Peking opera stage. It became the most soul-stirring brilliant legend.
