A visit to the Neolithic Grey Cairns of Camster, and a look inside one of the chambers of the long cairn. Originally built more than 5000 tears ago, this Neolithic, Orkney-Cromarty type, long, horned, burial cairn was first excavated in 1886 by Anderson and Shearer, who established that the cairn was bounded by a 6' high double-faced wall. It was excavated again in 1971-73 by Corcoran and in 1976-80 by Masters, showing that its chambers belonged to two separate chambered round cairns, each encircled by a wall, which had later been incorporated in the long cairn. Following the excavations the cairn was fully reconstructed, with the slightly absurd inclusion of a skylight in one of the chambers to admit light, something that has been done to other cairns such as Cairnpapple and Unstan.
