Blood streaked eggs, slab sided eggs, white banded eggs,softshell eggs…Weird eggs happen! An odd egg here or there doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem, but keeping a close eye on your nest boxes is always a good idea. Here are a few egg oddities and their causes. Blood streaked eggs are very common in young layers, they can be caused by a sudden increase in day length or from passing a large egg. The blood streaks are a result of a small tear while laying. A slab–sided egg occurs when a second egg enters the shell gland before the first egg leaves. Because the second egg is not yet completely calcified, the side that touches the first egg is flattened. Slabsided eggs can be caused by stress or sudden lighting changes! The slabbed area is often very thin. White banded eggs are caused by two eggs coming into contact with each other in the shell gland pouch, normal calcification is interrupted and the first egg retained in the pouch will have an extra layer of calcium seen as the white band marking. These white banded eggs are also caused by stress or a sudden change in lighting or daylight. A soft–shelled egg has a thin layer of calcium deposited onto the shell membrane and the egg has a paper–like feel. Softshelled eggs can have many causes, they can be caused by a diet high in phosphorus, moldy feed, salty water, vitamin d deficiency, old age or a calcium deficiency. It’s not uncommon to see softshell eggs after finishing a treatment with Corid as a result of vitamin depletion or when fed an abundance of spinach or other treats high in oxalic acid. Keep an eye on your nest boxes, feed a quality feed, and always offer free choice oyster shell to your laying hens. More egg abnormalities in part two!
