In this sample lesson, Nathan East discusses tone production from the right hand. He reviews the different positions of the right hand and the different sounds those positions can produce: warm to cold depending on the hand's distance from the neck.

One of the things Nathan East wants his students to focus on when they are warming up is tone. Tone is important because "a tone is a big part of your sound and the way people identify you," says Nathan East. It is not the busy notes or the hard technical parts, but the tone that sets the famous musicians apart from the rest with their unique sounds.

If the right hand is by the bridge, the bass produces a rather percussive sound. You can hear how it sounds in the lesson. The sound is clearly different from the sound made when you pluck closer to the frets. There, you get a nice, warm sound. Different locations where you place your fingers determine the tone.

Another way to change the tone using the right hand is to use the fingernail. By using the fingernails, you can even sound like you are using a pick. With the use of the fingernails, you can use both the front and the back, or use one or two fingers. There are so many variations in tone that can be caused just with the right hand.
