DW Collector's Series Mahogany Jazz 6-piece Kit Review by Sweetwater Sound

In this video I am demonstrating the DW Collector's Series Mahogany Jazz 6-piece kit with a Natural Satin finish and nickel hardware. This a very cool drum kit that brings with it a great vintage-style feel and vibe.

What gives these drums their vintage feel and tone is the use of Gum wood in the drum shell construction. Gum wood is soft wood that couples together very well with maple, cherry, and mahogany. All drum kits in DW's Collectors Jazz series have that Gum wood combination. The drums shells for this kit are 7-ply, with three Gum wood plies making up the center of the shell. You get 7" x 10" and 8" x 12" rack toms, 10" x 14" and 11" x 16" floor toms, a 6" x 14" matching snare, and a 15" x 22" kick drum. The depth of these drums are shallower then the majority of drums on the market. They call these their "FAST" sizes because the shallower depth has less sustain; in fact, the woods used, the rounded bearing edges, and the shallow size are what give these drums an amazing round and beefy sound, all with great attack and precision. The snare drum is sensitive in the hands and has a wonderful full sound even cranked up high.

The kit comes with DW's True Hoops and True Pitch Tuning Rods. The STM rack tom suspension system lets the rack toms hang freely adding more to the sustain and projection of the drums. The snare drum comes with the great MAG throw-off and also the Three Position Butt Plate giving you options on your snare wire tension. The coolest piece of hardware on this kit is the tom holder that is mounted on the kick drum. Why do I think that is so cool? Because it is old school. Drums back in the old days really only had the toms mounted to the kick drum. It was not until later, I don't know exactly when but sometime in the late '80's I think, that people started using rack systems or mounting the toms to cymbal stands. To me it just felt very comfortable to have the toms there on the kick drum. You can adjust toms along the mount closer or father away from your playing position and with the universal ball joints you can find the perfect position for your toms in no time at all.
