Small Car Comparison Review : Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30

In the first half of 2015, the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30 and Mazda 3 made up more than 10 per cent of the entire new vehicle market, which is an astonishing feat.

In the sales race, it’s the Corolla that’s got its nose in front of the Mazda 3, with the i30 consistently holding down third just behind.

The Toyota Corolla is the newest car here thanks to a big update introduced midway through 2015. The SX with the optional continuously variable transmission we’ve got here is also the most expensive, priced at $25,490. Even with that monobrow, it’s arguably the sportiest looking Corolla ever, with a revised front end, chunky side skirts, and new tail-lights.

Like the Corolla, the Hyundai i30 was also updated earlier this year. The rejigged range added this model, the Active X, which costs $24,390 with the six-speed auto. The new vertical-slat grille is the biggest change on the outside, along with new alloy wheels and Active X badging.

It’s probably no coincidence that the i30 is priced identically to the Mazda 3 Maxx in base form. The car you see here is fitted with the optional Safety Pack, which adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Smart City Brake Support, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror for an extra $1500.
