Sunday run out of Pokai Bay at 4:05 am in search of Akule (goggle eye) yielded 7 in 40-50ft. Trolling a live akule right before sunrise I got hit in 181ft by an approximately 13lb Kaku (great baracuda). As I was unhooking the kaku for release when I marked opelu (mackerel scad) in 170ft. I was lucky enough to catch two small opleu right at sunrise from that pile. The next two hours went on with no action other than my nervous akule darting around (I wanted to wait until the minor bite to put an opelu out). The minor bite was 7:52-9:52 am. With two live baits out (opelu on fluorocarbon, and akule out on wire) I began drifting around the 200ft mark. At 8:25 am in 192ft my opleu and akule were both hit resulting in a double hook up. I had the opleu out of the right side of the kayak and the akule on the left. The akule was hit 20 seconds after the opelu. I had already been pulled to my right by the drag of the first fish, when the akule rod (now tangled in another rod behind me not in use) started screaming. I was fortunate enough to get out of that tangle and catch the first fish which turned out to be a 5lb Kawa Kawa (bonita). During the initial double hook up I had put out a potential duress call (to my friends) for fear of capsizing as I was being pulled in multiple directions. Little jack was nice enough to offer assistance as he was the closest angler. Having landed the first fish and regaining control, I turned my attention to fight the second fish which turned out to be a 22lb Shibi (Yellow fin tuna). Things slowed down for a while although I caught an aha (needle fish) in 160ft at 10:30. With one live akule on the surface and one dead akule on bottom I stated making my way in. 180ft passed then 170, 150 no bites all the way until 117ft at 11:15 am when my dead bait was smashed. After a brief fight it turned into a 17lb Kagami (African pompano). It was good day on the water with great fishing friends. On another note I suck at guessing the weight of my fish (thought the shibi was 30 something lol).
