"Our bio-dynamic plots of land are characterised by three levels of growing. At the top, the canopy is the palm, then comes fruit trees, for example apple, pomegranate, fig, apricot, lemon and even orange and underneath at the very bottom are vegetables and forage for animals. We have been lucky enough on behalf of the small-scale farmers to be able to export the vegetable seeds. We''re trying to find openings for the fruit trees such as drying fruit from the orchard. It''s all bio-dynamic."

"In Tunisia we have two organisations that vet date production. One that supervises standards, size and quality and then the other controls plant hygiene. In addition to that there has been an improvement through a lot of effort being put in by exporters to diversify packaging. There are no exports in bulk. Everything is exported ready-packed and there is a wide variety in the types of packaging used."

"Our date production is around 600 tons. Usually we pack and export around 150 tons. The rest of our production - well unfortunately we don''t have appropriate markets in Europe. They are sold on the local market as conventional dates without a label."
