The allegation is of paying a bribe of about Rs 2,250 crore to Indian officials to get contracts for solar energy projects in India. The Adani Group had raised funds from American investors for these projects, which is why this case has come against them in the US court. The group had estimated a profit of about $2 billion from these projects in 20 years.

The main characters in this entire case are Gautam Adani, chairman and founder of Adani Group, Sagar Adani, executive director of Adani Green Energy, Ranjit Gupta, former CEO of Azure Power, Rupesh Aggarwal, an American issuer who is an advisor to Azure Power. According to the US indictment, Adani Group and the American issuer had secured a contract to provide 12 gigawatts of solar power to the government-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), but SECI could not find buyers in India to buy the solar power. Without buyers, the deal could not proceed and both companies were at risk of huge losses. Therefore, Adani Group and Azure Power offered bribes to Indian government officials.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accused Adani Green Energy Limited founder Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani of paying hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes and hiding information about it from investors. The
SEC says that Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani had claimed to investors during a $750 million bond offering that their company was free from corruption and Adani Green officials were never involved in bribery. The SEC has said in its complaint that these claims were false.

According to the SEC, Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani offered huge bribes to Indian state government officials to get a contract for a large solar power project in India. Another company, Azure Global Power Limited, was also involved in this case, which agreed to pay a part of this bribe. The SEC claims that Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani also played a role in collecting the bribe amount from Azure.
