Daniil Medvedev Biography

Daniil Medvedev is one of the most successful and popular tennis players in the world. He is currently ranked as the world No. 3 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and was ranked as the world No. 1 for 16 total weeks. He has won 19 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2021 US Open and 2020 ATP Finals. He is widely considered the greatest tennis player of all time though the topic is still up for debate.

Early Life and Education

Medvedev was born on February 11, 1996, in Moscow, Russia, to Sergey Medvedev and Olga Medvedeva. His father was a computer engineer who ran his own business of building materials sales, and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Yelena and Yuliya.

Medvedev started playing tennis at the age of six, inspired by his father who was also a tennis enthusiast. He also learned to play the guitar and hapsichord as a hobby. He attended specialized schools for maths and physics and graduated earlier than his peers. He then enrolled at Moscow State Institute of International Relations to study economics and commerce, but dropped out to focus on his tennis career. He later obtained a diploma as a coach from the Russian university of Physical education, Sports, Youth, and Tourism.

Tennis Career

Medvedev made his ATP Tour main draw debut at the singles event of the 2015 Kremlin Cup, where he lost in the first round. In 2016, he won his first ATP Challenger title in Chennai, India, and reached his first ATP Tour final in Nice, France, where he lost to Guido Pella.

In 2017, Medvedev achieved his first Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon, where he upset world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in the first round. He also won his first ATP Tour title in Sydney, Australia, defeating Alex de Minaur in the final. He reached two more finals that year in Chennai and Washington, but lost both.

Medvedev married his longtime girlfriend Daria Schneiderman on September 12, 2018. They met when they were both teenagers at a tennis camp in France. Schneiderman is a former tennis player who now works as a marketing manager for Lacoste.

Medvedev can speak Russian, French, and English fluently. He lives in Monte Carlo, Monaco with his wife and their dog named Theodore.
