Want to become a millionaire? There are several practical steps you can take on a daily basis to help you get there.

This is not a "get rich quick" plan. If anything, this is a "get yourself organized and get rich slowly and steadily" plan, which has a much higher likelihood of being successful in the long term. Don't get discouraged, though-- the steps we'll talk about today will also put you in a great position if you happen to win the lottery, sell your startup, or inherit millions from your family. In order to stay rich, you're going to have to learn a few things.

2. Pay Off Your Debt. The biggest impediment to wealth is debt. In other words, your money can't start working FOR you if you're currently paying the minimum on your credit cards at 17 percent interest. 3. Establish an emergency fund that you can get to right away. Experts say "at least 3 months' worth of expenses." Put this in a savings account-- we've listed several options below. Having this fund will keep you from going back into debt.

4. Optimize your life. This is when you look at every part of your life and ask yourself "how could I do this better?" so that you can save and invest more money. Mint.com is an excellent free app for tracking all of your spending and earnings. Once you have a picture of how you spend, you will start thinking of ways to save more.

5. Start investing. Einstein called compound interest "the eighth wonder of the world." Compound interest is when your money makes money on itself. Open an investment account at a brokerage company like E-Trade or TDAmeritrade, and make your first investments. Be sure to reinvest the dividends!
