E.th.ph. analyzes two most important problems of modern libertarianism.
The first problem is a foundational (or philosophical) one and deals with the non-existence of a subject in the post-modern world. Even if one disagrees with post-modern philosophy, this very same problem is present in the case of children, where it is absolutely unclear whether they could be considered free subjects or not.
The second problem is a practical (or political) one, and it stems from the modern rise of socialistic tendencies. The big government and welfare state became a substitute for a nuclear family in terms of redistribution of resources from men to women. Since women represent the majority of voters, and they benefit directly from government spending (unlike men), they would demand more and more taxes and regulations, and libertarianism (and society in general) would fail. Perhaps the best libertarians can do at the moment is to ally with the conservatives who propose to return to individual level redistribution (nuclear family).
