Today, I am going to show you how to use Google Maps. Firstly, I will go to my search engine and type in ‘Google Maps’.

When I click on ‘Google Maps’ in the search results, it will load the ‘Google Maps’ web page. This will usually display my current location.

Here, at the bottom right-hand side of the screen, are a ‘plus’ and a ‘minus’ sign. I can use these to zoom in and out of the map. I can slowly zoom out, using the ‘minus’ sign, and see the whole of the United Kingdom! In fact, if I keep zooming out, I can see the whole of planet Earth! I can move the map from left to right, up and down.

I can use Google Maps to find any place in the world, but I will need to know the name of the place I am looking for first.

Today, I want to find my local park. So, I’m going to search for it using ‘Search Google Maps’, which is at the top left-hand side of the screen. I will click in this box and type in the name of my local park: Mary Stevens Park. Once I have typed it in, Google Maps will display my local park on the map.

I can change the view (or type of map) by clicking on the ‘Layers’ icon at the bottom of the screen. I’ve changed my map to an aerial view, so now I can see some of the features of my local park: the play area here, and the park café here. I can see them better by zooming in.

Now I’ve located my local park, I would like to travel there from my current location. Google Maps will give me directions for my journey if I click on the blue button that says ‘directions’. Google Maps should already have my location, so once I’ve clicked on the blue button, the directions to my local park should be displayed. It will show me the best route on the map and even give me written directions too!

I can also change the mode of transport for my journey, by clicking on the transport symbols at the top of the screen. The car will show me the best driving route; the person, the best walking route; the train, the best route by public transport; and the bicycle, the best cycle route.

I am going to walk, so I will click on the person. I can then go back to my map and zoom in to see Point A (my starting location) and Point B (my finishing location).

Why don’t you have a go at doing this yourself to find your local park?

Remember, you will need its name to get started!
