Photographers are finding that lugging around a SLR camera is very inconvenient. For this reason I see camera manufacturers investing a lot of Research and Development into the point and shoot cameras that are moble. So what is the result of this new technology? Will a point and shoot camera outperform an SLR? Or is beauty truly in the eye of the beholder? And is a Point and Shoot camera better than you camera on your phone?

My first impression:

The Canon power shot ST 4000 is very simple to use. It is also simple and elegant I like the black exterior and the large LCD screen on the back. The buttons are very user friendly and easy to find. The camera is small and very light. I've seen other models that are thinner but the power shot makes up for the lack of thinness with advanced features and capabilities. The collapsible lens allows the camera to have a 3.8 optical zoom and a digital zoom. So as long as you are not stalking someone you should be OK. This camera also has an HDMI port so you can connect directly from the camera into your HDMI receiver or television that has HDMI. The detachable battery is very easy to charge and will accept an USB charge through a computer. But I found that taking the battery out and charging it through the plug device was the fastest way to charge the camera. The camera has no internal memory so you need to buy an sd card right away. Simple mount for tripod as expected. Standard internal microphone and nicely integrated flash that recharged quickly.

Performance:

The graphic user interface of the camera is very intuitive similar to all other power shots in every way. Taking pictures was very simple and it truly is a point and shoot experience. I did have some pictures that came out blurry because of the autofocus. However the speed in which you can take pictures is very snappy. The autofocus has a feature where it will do face recognition and assist you sent her or off-center subject you are taking pictures of. It is great when you're taking pictures of multiple people and you want to center the subject. The pictures that I took were brilliant. 10 MP is more than enough and they look bright and crisp. The SD4000 did above average in low light. The flash is also above board for standard point and shoot. The video I put together using animoto dot com.

Video:

Before getting involved with this Canon power shot camera I was shooting video on an iPod touch fourth-generation. (Both of the powershot and the ipod touch 4 shot 720p video) The video on this camera far exceeded my expectations. I was able to experience brilliant video even in lowlight. The camera held its own with motion and moving objects. The camera did have some challenges with autofocus if I've mounted the camera on a tripod and was filming a still object. If anything in the background moved the camera would try to focus on the movement and you would lose the focus for a brief second. I'm sure that it was something in the settings and not the camera itself. The image was table for the most part. A point and shoot is only as still as the operator. But for the most part the image was stable.

Sound:

The sound recording was good for the most part but I do not have an external microphone and I am not sure if the camera will accept one. If you need good sound then you are fine with this camera but if you need a shotgun mic. or professional sound quality then you may want to step up to a SLR that shots video.

Integration:

If you are on a Mac then you can use imove and iphoto to download pictures and video. I used picassa and it was very simple. If you are on a PC I am sure that it would be the same experience. Canon does a nice job with compression and formats.

Overall:

Great camera! I would feel comfortable using it almost anywhere. I would use it over my camera on my phone any day of the week. The video is really excellent. If you have a high definition TV it will blow you away have great it look.
