We're following breaking news out of Tuscarawas County where one person was shot and killed by an officer early Friday morning in the area on I-77 near state Route 80 in Dover.

Ohio State Highway Patrol officials say the incident began on Friday, May 3, at 1:42 a.m. when troopers stopped to assist with a disabled 1994 Chevrolet pick-up truck. The traffic stop lasted "several hours after a suspect brandished a weapon."

During the traffic stop, the Tuscarawas County Crisis Intervention Team and EMS attempted to remove him from the truck to seek medical attention. During that time, troopers say they observed a weapon behind his back. However, the negotiations with the man were unsuccessful.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell tells 3News that officers tried to work with the man, who was showing signs of mental distress, for nearly three hours before he pulled out a gun.

The OSHP says the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Kendell Floyd Woodard of Dayton, pointed the weapon at law enforcement, leading to his fatal shooting by law enforcement.
