In collaboration with the Preventive Medicine Enhancement for Maine (PrevME) program as a part of the Division of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at Maine Medical Center.

Objectives

1. Understand four basic and REAL principles of motivational interviewing in behavior change conversations
2. Identify and apply skills for improved connection and to build trust, uncover discrepancies of values to actions, and empower patients and clients
3. Access resources to explore and deepen your skills in motivational interviewing

Discussion Questions

1. Describe a time when someone was not using REAL principles with you in a conversation about your personal health habits, as in unsolicited advice or telling you what to do. What were your reactions, as in thoughts and emotions?
2. Using the REAL principles, describe how it could have gone better.
3. Practice applying Motivational Interviewing skills with a friend or colleague. Considering using the scenarios in page 8 on the MI Basics handout. See “Motivational Interviewing – The basics” in the resources section below.
