Herceg Novi is a coastal town in Montenegro. Located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, Herceg Novi was founded in 1382 by King Tvrtko I of Bosnia. The town is sometimes called the "City of Stairs" due to its steep, hilly terrain. Its name, Herceg Novi, translates to "New Duke," reflecting its foundation by a Bosnian noble. Herceg Novi was called Castelnuovo ("New castle" in Italian) between 1482 and 1797 as part of the Ottoman Empire. Nowadays it is a popular with Russian and Serbian tourists who enjoy its calm atmosphere, beautiful vantage points, and seaside promenade.

The town has a mix of Venetian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian architectural influences. Landmarks include Kanli Kula, a 16th-century Ottoman fortress now used as an open-air theater, and Forte Mare, a seaside fortress built in the 14th century which we saw on an earlier tour (    • Walking in HERCEG NOVI / Montenegro 🇲...   )

On this tour we see Herceg Novi’s Old Town with its narrow streets, churches, and a clock tower built by the Austrians in 1850. With just around 33.000 inhabitants it is less crowded compared to the most popular Montenegro vacation places Kotor and Budva.

The coastal climate makes it a popular summer destination, with temperatures averaging 25°C in July. The promenade, called Pet Danica, stretches over 7 kilometers along the sea, connecting beaches, restaurants, and cafes. On this tour we walk a lot along the seaside towards Meljine Beach.
