I did not expect this. Our interview took an unexpected turn as Miss Canada 2018 Marta Stepien revealed that she survived an abusive relationship when she was younger.

Since today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, I thought this conversation would be interesting to share. Hearing a beauty icon such as Miss Canada share her vulnerabilities and strength in overcoming an abusive situation that most victims are too shy or afraid to talk about just goes to show that abuse can affect even those we least expect it to. It’s more prevalent and hidden behind closed doors and women of any culture, race, age or social or economic status can be suffering in silence.

According to the UN, 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and it’s usually by someone they are in a relationship with. Here, Marta shares some advice on how she got through the ordeal.
The statuesque Polish-born beauty queen is not just a pretty face. She is a researcher and student of biomedical engineering and speaks French, Polish, German and English.
