Prosperous ruler, flawed monarch, fated ally of the Pandavs.

Virat, king of Matsya, was born of the celestial Maruts and ruled a wealthy land famed for its cattle. He married Sudeshna of Kekaya, and his court grew powerful under his brother-in-law Kichaka. Though prosperous, Virat was often portrayed as gullible and weak, more a keeper of cattle than a strong ruler.

His defining moment came during the Pandavs’ year in disguise. Unwittingly, he sheltered them in his palace, while Kichaka’s tyranny overshadowed his rule. When Kichaka was slain by Bhima, Virat trembled at the consequences. Later, he was even captured by the Trigartas, only to be rescued again by the disguised Pandavs.

Despite his flaws, Virat stood with dharma. He gave his daughter Uttarā in marriage to Abhimanyu, forging one of the most important alliances of the war. At Kurukshetra, he fought valiantly—against Bhishma, Drona, and Shalya—until he fell to Drona’s arrows.

Virat’s story is one of contrasts: a king mocked for weakness, yet remembered for courage at the end, and for playing a vital role in shaping the alliances of the Mahabharat.
