You can't light a blue LED with a 1.2 volt rechargeable battery - or can you? In this circuit, not only is the battery voltage insufficient to overcome the LED's forward voltage, but the LED is connected the wrong way round.

But an inductor fixes both problems by generating a high reverse polarity voltage when the battery is disconnected.
