Pakistan’s cement sector is currently facing one of the most confusing phases in recent years. On the surface, everything looks positive: local cement demand has increased by around 10%, indicating strong construction activity and improving economic momentum. Yet surprisingly, overall sector profitability has declined. Total earnings slipped nearly 2%, while gross margins dropped sharply due to falling prices in northern regions and a dramatic 70% collapse in exports to Afghanistan.

At the same time, production costs surged because companies had to shift from cheaper Afghan coal to expensive imported coal from South Africa. This squeezed margins heavily. However, two unexpected relief factors prevented a major crisis: finance costs fell by 54% due to lower interest expenses and debt repayments, and other income increased slightly.

Company performance varied widely. Larger players with diversified markets remained stable, while firms dependent on northern markets suffered more. With improving local demand, softer coal prices, and potential interest rate cuts ahead, the sector still offers selective opportunities. Investors must focus on strong balance sheets, geographic diversification, and cost control before making decisions.

پاکستان کا سیمنٹ سیکٹر اس وقت ایک عجیب اور پیچیدہ مرحلے سے گزر رہا ہے۔ ایک طرف مکامی سطح پر سیمنٹ کی طلب تقریباً 10 فیصد بڑھ چکی ہے، جس سے تاثر ملتا ہے کہ تعمیراتی سرگرمیاں تیز ہو رہی ہیں اور معیشت بہتر ہو رہی ہے۔ لیکن حیران کن طور پر پورے سیکٹر کا منافع کم ہو گیا ہے۔ مجموعی منافع میں تقریباً 2 فیصد کمی آئی جبکہ گراس مارجن میں واضح دباؤ دیکھا گیا۔

شمالی علاقوں میں قیمتوں میں کمی اور افغانستان کو برآمدات میں 70 فیصد کی شدید گراوٹ نے کمپنیوں کی آمدنی کو متاثر کیا۔ دوسری طرف سستا افغان کوئلہ بند ہونے کے بعد مہنگا درآمدی کوئلہ استعمال کرنا پڑا جس سے پیداواری لاگت بڑھ گئی۔ تاہم مالی لاگت میں 54 فیصد کمی اور دیگر آمدنی میں اضافہ نے اس بحران کو کسی حد تک سنبھال لیا۔

بڑی اور متنوع مارکیٹ رکھنے والی کمپنیاں نسبتاً مستحکم رہیں جبکہ صرف شمالی مارکیٹ پر انحصار کرنے والی کمپنیاں زیادہ متاثر ہوئیں۔ آنے والے وقت میں مقامی طلب میں اضافہ اور لاگت میں کمی سرمایہ کاروں کے لیے منتخب مواقع پیدا کر سکتی ہے۔
