Vitality to Vulnerability: A Personal Battle Against Delirium

Описание к видео Vitality to Vulnerability: A Personal Battle Against Delirium

In memory of my dad, Mr J Hadzic Sr, in this video I will tell a somewhat uncomfortable personal story. Just a few weeks before his heart attack, my dad was the epitome of vitality at 82 – fishing, boating, and outpacing friends half his age. His mind was as sharp as his physical strength; he was unstoppable, and with boundless energy. Nearly all my colleagues and friends knew my dad, Mr J. Then, a phone call shattered this idyllic image: The neighbors called me that he had suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. I rushed to his side, only to find a stranger in my father's place. There he was, a once robust man, now lost in a tangle of tubes and monitors, his eyes reflecting fear and confusion in the sterile, buzzing environment of the ICU. Our family went through a very difficult time through this period. We managed to salvage my dad with heroic efforts that are not available to most folks. However, the literature indicates that 38% of patients suffering from postoperative or hospitalization delirium and consequent dementia, do not recover, and continue to experience cognitive decline and dementia. In this video I tell a personal story and urge a call to action, to routinely utilize effective, existing tools, such as PIPRA { https://www.pipra.ch/} to identify patients at a risk of postoperative and hospitalization delirium and undertake preventive and early treatment measures.
