Researchers at EPFL in Switzerland have shown that discarded Norway lobster, or langoustine, shells can be turned into functional robotic components. Instead of copying nature’s design with synthetic materials, the team used the shells themselves, combining them with simple motors, soft rubber like parts, and artificial tendons to create lightweight robotic grippers and actuators.

The shells provide a rare combination of strength, jointed flexibility, and low weight, allowing the robots to lift loads more than 100 times their own mass and move rapidly without breaking. Because the biological parts naturally biodegrade while the mechanical components can be reused, the work points to a new kind of sustainable robotics that turns food waste into high performance machines.
