Factors for Measuring Peridot Quality & Market Price :
It is important to note, that unlike diamonds, there is no standardized grading system in place for colored stones like there is for diamonds. However, the 4C’s can also be applied in determining the value for these gems, namely color, clarity, cut, and carat.

Color: As previously mentioned, though peridots will always have an olive green hue, the shade ranges from pure green to yellowish green to greenish yellow. The finest hue, however, is a vivid olive green without any undertones of yellow or brown. As a result, stones with this vivid green saturation, without any undertones, will hold more value than those with undertones.

Clarity: For the most part, peridots are usually clean to the naked eye. However, under magnification, inclusions will be visible. These inclusions may be tiny black spots that are actually remnants of mineral crystals. Other inclusions may be visible known as lily pads or disc inclusions.

Cut: It is important to note that as colored stones are denser than diamonds, they are not cut in the same way. Lapidaries cut colored stones to maximize their color, therefore, some stones may be deeper than others allowing for 2 exact carat weights to be completely different sizes. For this reason, it is advisable to use mm measurements when determining the size gem you’d like.

Carat: As far as carat size is concerned, you would find stones with small carat weight more affordable than highly prized large carats. Prices will increase drastically for fine quality stones above 10×8 mm. The finest large peridots are usually from Myanmar and, more recently, from a source high in the Himalayas of Pakistan.
