Dress watches place their primary focus on refined designs and premium materials. Additionally, in much the same way that the rules of formal attire have become less strict over the years, the parameters of what constitutes a dress watch have also become a bit more open-ended.
Rolex is best known for producing some of the world’s most famous sports watches, but the brand also has a dedicated line of dress watches in the form of the Cellini. The current Rolex Cellini collection is exclusively crafted from 18k gold and fitted with leather straps. Additionally, there are classic time-only models, alongside time and date, dual time, and even moonphase versions.
Outside of the Cellini collection, there are also versions of the Rolex Datejust and Day-Date that are fitted with leather straps and positioned as dress watch options within their respective lineups. While these models still have the Oyster cases and offer users 100 meters of water resistance, they otherwise embrace classic dress watch styling with clean dials and elegant fluted bezels.
The Omega De Ville collection is the brand’s line of dress watches. Originally part of the Seamaster range, the De Ville became its own standalone collection in 1967 and has since grown to include a variety of different refined dress watch models.
There are also Omega Aqua Terra models that toe the line between sports and dress watches. Offering 150 meters of water resistance, the Aqua Terra could just as easily be classified as a sports watch. However, its refined and versatile styling allows it to effortlessly pair with formal attire.

First released in 1932, the Patek Philippe Calatrava is one of the cornerstone offerings in the brand’s catalog, and it is often credited for serving as the blueprint for the modern dress watch. Today, the Calatrava lineup is larger and more varied than ever before; however it still offers a number of dress watches that adhere to the same design philosophy of the original models.
Panerai does not really produce dress watches in the traditional sense of the word. However, the brand does offer a range of timepieces that are geared more towards the dress watch crowd.
The Panerai Luminor Due collection follows the same general design language of the regular Luminor, but with only 30 meters of water resistance, the Luminor Due is definitely not a tool watch. However, its significantly thinner case allows it to easily slip under the cuff of a dress shirt.
Despite being best known for its sports models, Tudor also offers a number of options in regards to dress watches. The Tudor Glamour Double Date offers an unusual take on the traditional dress watch aesthetic. With a 42mm case, a small seconds indicator, and a large dual-window date display, the Glamour Double Date has a unique aesthetic, while still retaining all the hallmark dress watch design traits .
Oris is best known for producing high-quality Swiss-made watches at a relatively affordable price. However Oris also produces several premium models with in-house movements and precious metal cases.
The Oris Artelier 110 Years Limited Edition features a 43mm case in solid 18k rose gold. Powering the watch is Oris’s in-house Cal. 110 movement, which offers users a whopping 10-day power reserve. Limited to just 110 pieces, this watch is priced significantly higher than most of the other models in Oris’s catalog; however it also represents a significant step up in terms of the level of craftsmanship, materials, and engineering.
Much like Oris, Tissot is another brand that is best-known for producing quality Swiss-made watches at affordable prices. However, just like Oris, Tissot also produces a range of premium models with precious metal cases and upgraded movements.
The Tissot Carson Powermatic 80 features a 40mm case crafted from solid 18k gold. Powering the watch is Tissot’s Powermatic 80 movement, which offers an increased 80-hour power reserve. Additionally, despite the solid gold case and higher-spec movement, the Tissot Carson Powermatic 80 can often be found at only a slight premium above the brand’s standard mechanical watches.
When shopping for a dress watch, factors such as additional complications and water-resistance are for less important, leaving you free to focus on finding one that feels good on your wrist with a design that makes you happy.
