Jaigarh Fort is situated on the Aravalli hills at a distance of 10 km from Jaipur city. It can be reached from Amer Fort via a small steep hill climb.

The fort was built in 1726 by Raja Jai Singh II and was designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a renowned Bengali architect. The main purpose of Jaigarh Fort was to store weapons for Amer Fort in case of war. This area was initially ruled by the Meenas, and it is believed that the Jaigarh Fort was built by them along with the Amer Fort.

During the rule of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, the fort came under Raja Jai Singh II who made major changes in the structure of the fort and due to his contribution the fort was named Jaigarh.
The architecture of the fort is Indo-Persian and consists of court rooms and halls.

During the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Jaigarh Fort was one of the most efficient cannon foundries in the world. When the Mughal War of Succession broke out in 1658, Dara Shikoh secured the Jaigarh Fort until it was defeated by his younger brother Aurangzeb. Later, the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah appointed Jai Singh II as the Mughal Qiladar of the Jaigarh Fort.

Jaigarh Fort is home to the biggest cannon, which is called 'Jaivana Cannon'. It was constructed in a foundry in Jaigarh in 1720 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.
