One of a small number of university-operated observatories left in the US, Pine Mountain Observatory, owned and operated by the University of Oregon, rests in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest. A place where research and science outreach are intimately connected, Pine Mountain Observatory is one of the best of its kind due to its diverse facilities and location, soaring 6300 feet above sea level in an extremely dark part of central Oregon, just 30 minutes south-east of Bend.
