Tiny Flying Robot from MIT Flies as Fast as a Bumblebee

MIT engineers have developed a tiny aerial robot that can fly with the speed and agility of a bumblebee. This microrobot could one day help in search-and-rescue missions by reaching places where humans or larger drones cannot go, such as narrow gaps in collapsed buildings after earthquakes.

The robot is smaller than a paperclip and uses soft artificial muscles to flap its wings very quickly. These wings give it powerful lift and allow sharp, fast movements just like real insects.

To achieve this advanced performance, researchers designed a new AI-based control system. Earlier versions relied on human-tuned controls, which limited their speed. The new system combines a mathematical planner with a deep-learning model, allowing the robot to react in real time and fly aggressively without losing stability.

As a result, the robot can fly 447% faster and accelerate 255% more than before. In tests, it completed 10 somersaults in just 11 seconds and stayed very close to its planned path even in windy conditions.

In the future, researchers plan to add cameras and sensors so the robots can operate outdoors independently. Their goal is to create insect-like robot swarms that can save lives and monitor dangerous environments.
