PTCL Group, Pakistan’s largest telecom company, is showing signs of financial struggle similar to other state-owned entities like PIA and Pakistan Railways, despite rising revenues. In the first nine months of this year, PTCL Group’s revenue grew 15.3% to Rs160.6 billion, largely due to strong consumer demand for fixed broadband, mobile data, and business solutions. Yet, the group posted a net loss of Rs15.3 billion.
PTCL was partially privatized in 2006 when UAE-based Etisalat acquired a 26% stake. While the government retains a 62% share, PTCL’s profits have declined since then. The group, which includes PTCL, Ufone, and Ubank, leads in wholesale internet services but continues to face challenges, notably a heavy net loss of Rs14.1 billion last year.
